Don't Let This Get The Best of You
What does it look like when Jesus walks into the middle of our longest-running struggles? In John 5:1-9, we encounter a man who had been living with an infirmity for thirty-eight years, stationed at a pool called Bethesda, which means 'house of mercy.' The setting itself is deeply symbolic. He is surrounded by others who are broken, all competing within a flawed system that only rewards whoever gets there first. Yet when Jesus arrives, He bypasses the entire crowd and goes straight to the one man whose wound nobody could see. That detail alone is worth sitting with. His condition was an infirmity, something invisible, something hidden beneath the surface. And is that not the most honest picture of where many of us live? We show up, we participate, we go through the motions, all while carrying something deep inside that we have never let anyone fully see. This message calls us to examine what we have been quietly nursing, and to honestly ask ourselves the same question Jesus asked that man: do we truly want to be made whole?
